PRESS RELEASE
NAUS CONDEMNS 60% FEE HIKE AT OSUN STATE UNIVERSITY, DEMANDS IMMEDIATE REVIEW
…Education should not be priced beyond the reach of the poor
The National Association of University Students (NAUS), Osun State Axis, has expressed deep dissatisfaction and strong opposition to the sudden 60% increase in tuition fees at Osun State University (UNIOSUN).
The association describes the hike as unjustifiable, insensitive, and anti-student, coming at a time when Nigerian families are already grappling with the harsh economic realities of inflation and rising cost of living.
The association posed questions to the management of Osun State University and the Osun State Government:
What informed a 60% increase in tuition fees at a time when the economy is bleeding?
Why should access to public education become a privilege for only the wealthy?”
NAUS further lamented that the increment will likely force many students to suspend or abandon their academic pursuits, especially those from low-income backgrounds who are already struggling to meet basic school and accommodation expenses.
The 60% hike is not just an economic figure, it represents shattered dreams , increased dropout rates and deepened poverty among Nigerian students,
Some students sponsor themselves through school by engaging in menial jobs, and with this hike, their education is at risk .
The National Association of University Students hereby makes demands to the management of Osun State University and the Osun State Government on Immediate suspension of the 60% tuition fee increment .
Education remains a fundamental right and a social investment that must be accessible to all, regardless of socio-economic status. NAUS calls on the Management and Osun State Government to reverse this fee hike immediately and initiate sustainable funding mechanisms that do not transfer the burden of governance failure onto students.
“No nation can progress when its youth are priced out of the classrooms “
