NAUS OSUN CMC to Lead Protest Over Rising Rent and Agent Fees in UNILESA Host Community
The National Association of University Students (NAUS) OSUN CMC has announced a peaceful protest scheduled for Monday, November 10, 2025, at 8:00am, in response to what it describes as exorbitant accommodation costs and exploitative agent fees affecting students of the University of Ilesa (UNILESA) and other students residing in the Ijesa community.
According to the association, the cost of renting accommodation around UNILESA has continued to surge at an alarming rate, with some landlords allegedly placing rental prices on par with high-income neighborhoods such as Lekki in Lagos State. The students argue that these price increases do not reflect corresponding improvements in living conditions and essential amenities.
In a statement issued by NAUS OSUN CMC, the group expressed deep concern over the situation, citing poor electricity supply, insecurity, and inadequate housing conditions despite the heavy financial burden placed on students.
> “We cannot continue to live in hardship while pursuing our education,” the statement read.
> “Rent keeps rising. Agent fees are unclear and unfair. Security is not guaranteed. Basic amenities are either unstable or completely unavailable. Enough is enough.”
The student body emphasized that the presence of UNILESA in the town should be a developmental blessing to the Ijesa community, not an avenue for exploitation.
The protest is expected to draw participation from students across institutions in the region, with NAUS assuring that the demonstration will be peaceful and centered on advocacy.
> "University education must not be turned into a luxury. UNILESA should uplift Ijesa land — not become a platform for extortion. Together, we stand.”
As of press time, the landlords’ associations and local authorities have not issued an official response regarding the planned protest.
