NAUS Raises Alarm Over Rising Insecurity, Demands Immediate Action from the Federal Authorities
The National Association of University Students (NAUS), under the leadership of Comr. Adeleke Samson Okikijesu, expresses deep concern over the alarming escalation of insecurity across Nigeria, particularly the growing threats confronting students, academic institutions, and communities nationwide.
Over the past months, reports of kidnappings, armed attacks, cult-related violence, banditry, and unchecked criminal activities have continued to rise, posing a direct threat to the safety and well-being of Nigerian students. The worsening situation calls for urgent, decisive, and coordinated intervention from the Federal Government and relevant security agencies.
As a body responsible for safeguarding the welfare of students in all tertiary institutions across the country, NAUS cannot remain silent while Nigerian students live in fear, travel in fear, study in fear, and pursue their academic dreams under the shadow of insecurity. Our campuses—once regarded as safe havens for learning and innovation—are increasingly becoming vulnerable targets for criminal elements.
We therefore call on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector General of Police, the Chief of Army Staff, and all relevant security stakeholders to:
1. Intensify security surveillance and operations around tertiary institutions nationwide.
2. Deploy more personnel and intelligence units to identified flashpoints and vulnerable communities.
3. Strengthen campus security architecture, including partnerships with school managements, community vigilantes, and local security networks.
4. Fast-track the arrest and prosecution of kidnappers and criminal gangs targeting students.
5. Develop a national student safety framework that sets standards for emergency response, campus security, road safety, and digital monitoring of threats.
NAUS also urges state governments, especially in regions experiencing heightened tension, to be proactive, rather than reactive, in preventing further breakdown of law and order.
The safety of Nigerian students is non-negotiable. Education cannot thrive in an atmosphere of fear, and Nigeria cannot achieve meaningful development while its future leaders are under constant threat.
NAUS will continue to monitor the situation closely and will not hesitate to mobilize peaceful advocacy actions if government institutions fail to act swiftly. Our commitment remains firm: the protection of every Nigerian student across every institution, state, and community.
We call on all students to remain vigilant, report suspicious movements, and adhere to safety advisories as we continue to engage authorities for lasting solutions.
Signed:
