Rising Insecurity: Director of Campus Health & Student Welfare, Sanusi Abdullateef, Warns Students to Stay Vigilant
Dear Students,
The leadership of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), Osun Axis, under the leadership of Comr. Adeleke Samson Okikijesu, through the Office of the Director of Campus Health and Student Welfare, wishes to formally address the growing concerns surrounding the current state of insecurity across Nigeria. Recent developments have highlighted the need for increased caution, enhanced personal responsibility, and a collective commitment to safeguarding ourselves and one another.
As students, our academic pursuit and daily activities require movement within and outside our campuses. This makes it essential to adopt proactive safety measures. In view of this, all students are strongly advised to take note of the following:
1. Limit unnecessary movements, especially during late hours. Engage in night activities only when absolutely unavoidable.
2. Prioritize communication by informing close friends, roommates, or family members about your movement patterns, destinations, and expected return times.
3. Use only safe, recognized, and verified modes of transportation. Avoid unregistered bikes, unmarked vehicles, or unfamiliar transport options.
4. Be mindful of your environment and avoid isolated routes, poorly lit areas, and deserted locations, particularly at night.
5. Stay updated with news and security alerts within your campus, community, and state, so you can make informed decisions on movement and activities.
6. Report any suspicious persons, objects, or activities immediately to your institution’s security unit or the appropriate emergency authorities. Early reporting can prevent avoidable harm.
7. Move in groups when possible, especially when attending off-campus events or returning late from academic engagements. There is increased safety in numbers.
8. Keep essential emergency contacts accessible at all times, including close friends, hostel porters, local security personnel, and family members.
9. Safeguard your personal belongings, including phones, laptops, and identity cards, as they are often targets for theft and can compromise your safety when lost.
10. Exercise caution on social media by avoiding the disclosure of sensitive personal information, travel plans, or location tags that could expose you to risk.
The welfare and security of every student remain a top priority for NAUS Osun Axis. We urge all students to take this advisory seriously and adhere strictly to the guidelines provided. Safety is a shared responsibility, and together, we can minimize risks and protect our academic community.
For emergency situations, welfare concerns, or verified security-related information, students are encouraged to contact the Office of Campus Health and Student Welfare without hesitation.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Stay alert. Stay responsible. Stay safe.
Sanusi Abdullateef
